Charms, Amulets and Talismans

the difference between charms, amulets and talismans

What are the differences? Charms, Amulets, and Talismans are all really charms. How they are used determines if they are an Amulet or Talisman.

CHARMS

Charms traditionally were sung. As with most things over time, they have become associated as a physical item bringing luck or magical potency. Most commonly thought of as bringers of luck. Pennies, four-leaf clover, lucky horseshoes, lady bugs and rabbit feet are powerful well-known examples.

Charms can be used to attract, manifest items and qualities, or as a repellent. When used to attract, charms are called talismans. When used to repel, charms are called amulets.

TALISMANS

Talismans are a charm that is used to attract, increase, supply certain powers, energies. Excalibur (King Arthur’s sword), a magic lamp, a magic rod, and a magic hat are all examples of talismans. These magical objects are worn to bring personal power and confidence to those who wear them.

Talismans are constructed from nearly anything but are commonly made from items associated with the properties they are meant to enhance. For instance, a talisman made from a rose quartz stone can be used to summon love and affection.

Talismans can also be made by inscribing certain incantations, symbols, or sigils onto other objects. Runes are common examples of popular talismans.

  • used to manifest or amplify powers and energies

    AMULETS

Amulets are a charm that is used to repel or let go of unwanted habits, spirits, energies, or people- like a shield. Crucifixes, garlic, coal, and runes are some of the amulets that have been used for centuries. They are physical charms and can be made of almost anything. Their common materials include natural items such as stones, crystals, or bones. Amulets can be worn by a person or even a favorite animal or set in a specific location for protection.
